Newport Beach, CA – A typically serene evening at the upscale Fashion Island shopping mall was shattered on Monday night as an armed robbery escalated into a chaotic and dangerous scene. Authorities are currently investigating the incident, which involved the attempted carjacking of a luxury vehicle and resulted in shots being fired.
The Newport Beach Police Department responded to the emergency call at approximately 11:30 p.m. The victims, two men who were near their vehicles in the mall's parking lot, were confronted by three masked suspects. The suspects, described as wearing ski masks, approached the men with clear intentions to rob them.
One of the victims, who was in a white Rolls-Royce SUV, was robbed at gunpoint, forced to hand over his jewelry and wallet. Meanwhile, the second victim, seated in a yellow Ferrari, found himself facing an even more perilous situation as the suspects attempted to carjack his vehicle.
In a desperate bid to escape, the driver of the Ferrari sped off. As he made his escape, the suspects opened fire. Although the bullets struck the Ferrari, the driver miraculously avoided injury. The suspects quickly fled the scene in what has been described as a blue Kia sedan.
This harrowing event is the latest in a series of high-profile incidents at Fashion Island. Just last month, a 68-year-old woman from New Zealand lost her life in a botched robbery attempt at the same mall, a tragic event that shook the community.
Fortunately, no one was seriously injured during Monday night’s robbery. The Newport Beach Police Department continues to investigate the incident, and no suspects have been apprehended at this time. The community remains on edge as authorities work to bring those responsible to justice.
