California Rocked By Fourth Earthquake In 24 Hours

California is enduring a tumultuous start to the year.

For the past week, the state has been battling the devastating Los Angeles wildfires. The flames, which began in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood, have quickly spread across the region. Over 1,000 structures have been reduced to ash, forcing more than 100,000 residents to evacuate their homes. Tragically, at least 25 lives have been lost in the blaze, according to officials.

But the wildfires are not the only challenge facing California this week. The state has now been struck by its fourth earthquake in just 24 hours.

The latest earthquake, with a magnitude of 2.8, occurred early Friday morning, shortly after 3 a.m., approximately 180 miles north of Los Angeles. This marks the fourth tremor in a series of seismic events within a single day.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the other earthquakes include:

  • A 2.8 magnitude quake in San Bernardino County on Thursday.

  • A 3.0 magnitude quake in Salton City on Wednesday.

All of these events are linked to the San Andreas Fault, the infamous boundary separating the Pacific and North American tectonic plates. Stretching over 800 miles along California’s coastline, this fault line is a well-known hotspot for seismic activity. Experts have long warned that the region is overdue for a massive earthquake, potentially reaching a magnitude of 8.0 or greater.

These quakes are part of a larger pattern of seismic activity observed across the United States in recent weeks. In December, Northern California experienced a 7.0 magnitude earthquake, while Alaska has reported several significant tremors over the past month.

With California grappling with both the wildfires and ongoing seismic activity, emergency services are working tirelessly to support affected communities. Our thoughts remain with everyone impacted by these crises as the state faces one of its most challenging times. Source: The Spun
